About Roy Doty
With over 200 published books that include the name Roy Doty as illustrator, writer, or both, this All American cartoonist has been freelancing for over 50 years. Noted for his long stints as an illistrator at both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest (over 25 years combined) and his distinction of being named "Illustrator of the Year" six times by the National Cartoonists' Society -- this passionate golfer is in a league of his own.
During World War II, Roy was engaged as a radar operator by the U.S. Army. During that time he also started publishing his cartoons including those for his camp newspaper in Georgia. Doty was sent to Paris after its liberation and worked for many miliatry publications including Stars and Stripes and Yank. He also freelanced for the London Daily Mail and Elle magazine.
After his discharge, "I had $350 in army discharge pay, and a return ticket to Columbus" he recalled "About a week before I would have run out of money and had to go home, the New York Times Magazine called and gave me three drawings... then CBS gave me a full-page ad... then Seventeen Magazine gave me six pages. I never looked back".
Even at over 80 years of age today, Roy still invests his 60 plus hour work week to projects which he is interested with a passion such as our own exclusive Golfwow! and NetHandicap commissioning. |
